For hundreds of years, composition and performance of European classical music has influenced and been influenced by cultures from other continents. South American dances and African musicians appear in 15th century sources but the participation of people of African descent in classical music is still discussed as a relatively recent occurrence.
This presentation discusses my research into the historical participation of classical musicians of African and Caribbean heritage.
