Research

Researching and constructing the biographies of classical performers and composers of African and Caribbean descent who were active in Britain before the 1960s.

Only the most famous names are remembered today. From the records and writings of formerly enslaved people to the university records of middle class 19th-century African students and Caribbean theatre acts, there are a wide range of sources that contain information about people whose participation in and contribution to classical music and culture in Britain has been forgotten or still remains to be recognised.

Archives that have been consulted so far include: Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, Royal Academy of Music, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, University of Glasgow, British Library, University of Edinburgh.
